Manhattan Movers and The Bronx Museum of the Arts

The Bronx Museum of the Arts is a fine arts museum that was founded in 1971 that you can visit with your New York City Movers. They have exhibitions by culturally divers and under-recognized artists on themes that are of special interest to the Bronx community.

The Bronx Museum of the Arts is a new type of museum that you can visit with your New York City Movers. The Bronx Museum was founded in 1971 by a group of local residents to bring visual arts to the Bronx. Today, it is the only fine arts museum in the borough. The permanent collection focuses on contemporary art by artists of African, Asian, and Latin American descent.

Important artistic accomplishments

When you visit with your New York City Movers, you will see works by artists who have lived or worked in the Bronx and those artists for which the Bronx has been critical to their artistic development. Some highlights that the Bronx Museum include "The Latin American Spirit" (1988), an examination of the role played by Latin American artists in modern and contemporary art; "Division of Labor: Women's Work in Contemporary Art, 1970-1995" (1995), on the shifting discourse on gender roles; "Urban Mythologies: The Bronx Represented Since the 1960s" (1999), on how the Bronx has been represented in art, film, media, and popular culture; "Game Show: Installations and Sculptures by Willie Cole" (2001); and "One Planet Under a Groove: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art" (2001), on the transnational impact of hip-hop culture on contemporary art.

Plan your visit

The museum is open Saturday through Monday from 12:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Thursday from 12:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., and Friday from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. They are closed Tuesday and Wednesday. They are closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's day. The suggested admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. It is free on Fridays.

How do I get there?

To get to the Bronx Museum of the Arts with your New York City Movers from the Cross Bronx Expressway, take #87/New York State Thruway South (Major Deegan) to exit 161/Yankee Stadium. Make a right off the exit ramp. Make a left at the light and go to 165th Street. Turn right onto 165th Street and make your way to the Grand Concourse. Parking is available for your New York City Movers across from the museum. You can also take the D or B trains to 167/Grand Concourse Station. Exit at the rear of the station and walk south along Grand Concourse for two blocks. Please note that D train does not stop here during rush hours in the peak direction.

The Bronx Museum of the Arts is an influential and important contemporary arts museum for you to visit with your New York City Movers.
